Description

Ariston is above average height, and though he may have originally been intended for a slim frame, years of slinging a sword have given him a broader back and a pair of sturdy arms. Besides generally conditioning his shape, long campaigning may have doled out a few of the nicks and scars visible here and there, but he is no more marred than the average fighting man his age. Of course, he is not quite an average fighting man. His usual clothes, though not splendid, are a cut above even an officer's in material and tailoring. When expecting trouble, he can be seen in finely-worked and undamaged ringmail, but he is not always armored. The sword hanging by his side, too, is of fine quality, with the Mallister crest worked into the hilt.

Ariston wears his dark hair longish, sometimes bound back with leather to keep it out of the way. His aquiline nose juts forward strongly, somewhat balanced by a near-lantern jaw, which is shaved when convenient. His eyes, a rather indeterminate, muddy shade that ranges from greyish-blue to a green approaching hazel, are rather too hardened to make a good window onto anything that might lie beyond.

Background

Ariston Mallister was born the eldest of the Lord of Seagate's children, with the birthright that position entailed. From childhood, he was brought up to know his duty as a defender of the coast and to be prepared to sacrifice himself in that line. He has trained his body from that time to be worthy of his responsibilities, and relishes any test of his physical prowess.

Intellectually, Ariston was never more than average. He was taught a fair command of battle tactics in his youth, but he is rarely creative and usually needs the help of brighter advisors when some bright new solution is called for. He was never particularly concerned with his intellectual prowess, but the intellectual capabilities of his younger brother, Tarrack, grew to be a danger to Ariston as they outstripped his own.

Even as children, Tarrack would regularly outwit Ariston, finding ways to get the older boy scolded, blaming his own misdeeds on him. Though Ariston was physically more imposing and could best his brother in a fight, he learned to fear this intelligence as he grew old enough to realize that it could one day be a threat to his very life.

There is a younger brother as well, Tarquin, but the young man has been sickly since boyhood (and perhaps suffers some concomitant intellectual or psychological abnormalities) and is usually bedridden. Ariston feels little threat from Tarquin, but on the contrary feels a certain responsibility to protect him, especially if Tarrack should cause him any trouble.

Ariston has always felt most alive when called upon to fight, and when there have not been opportunities, he has sought them out. He usually gets on well with men he commands as he puts on few airs for a nobleman, and is not above joining his men for a hastily-cooked meal and a few dirty jokes. It is among soldiers, too, that he first found his taste for gambling, not unrelated to the love of risking one's life. He has also learned all the refined games played in polite society, but the restraint of nobility has not accompanied his learning. Ariston finds himself in debt more often than he would like to admit, a fact which he labors very hard to conceal from his parents. He worries that his brother will get wind of one of his debts and cause him trouble.

Although Ariston was affianced at a young age, the girl to whom he was pledged died in her teenage years of disease, and Ariston has neglected finding another partner, but time is beginning to press upon him. He is (rather secretly) hoping to find a wife whose wealth can cover his debts, and who has men at her disposal who might help defend him from any attempts he fears his brother may make on his life or on his holdings as their father grows older.
